They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this one has a lot to say. In preparing for this post, I made a list of all the things we had done this summer, the list surprised me. Last year was the first time that had an activity-packed summer because we had learned that “winging it” left us stressed and struggling to stay entertained, so in April we start making lists and planning our summer.
In no way does this mean I don’t think families who don’t pre-plan are “doing it wrong”, we loves these families. They are our best summer fun partners because we can call a day or week in advance and have friends to join us in our activities. In fact, what is so beautiful about our family besties is that most of the time in the pre-planning stage, the other mom says “tell me what Jamie is going to do and I’ll sign my kids up for the same camp/class/activity. The guarantees that my only-child has friends there with him and she doesn’t have to spend time in her overloaded schedule coordinating activities for her twins. (Family bestie is our term for when the moms and kids have equally close friendships with their counterpart in the other family.)
I love how the different dynamics of summer planning can mesh together to create some really amazing adventures. We have had so many unique adventures by taking different friends with us to do activities.
Next week we start a new adventure – 3rd grade. Jamie is excited, I’m a little nervous. Third grade math scares me. I hope each of you had an amazing summer. I’d love the hear about it. Good luck with all your back-to-school adventures, see you on the other side!
